Lead Free Ammunition

Lead is a high density, toxic material that is difficult to conventionally machine and creates various environmental problems when processed. Most projectiles are currently produced from materials containing lead. There are many products claiming to be "Unleaded" which really is a lead projectile encased in a copper alloy plating or jacket. Using ammunition containing lead during training leads to contamination issues at both indoor and outdoor shooting ranges. Our projectiles are 100% lead free, non-toxic and made in-house to exacting specifications. Our rounds produce very little residue when fired.

Lead contamination has caused the expensive cleanup and often shutting down of many indoor shooting ranges. Those ranges that remain open have had to install and regularly maintain expensive air filtration systems. This airborne lead originates from two sources. Conventional primers use a lead based material which when ignited, releases lead into the air at the firing line. Also, when conventional leaded ammunition is fired, lead is vapourized from the end of the projectile releasing more lead into the air. Encapsulating projectiles only reduces the airborne lead at the time of firing. When the projectile hits the backstop, lead is released into the air.

Lead from outdoor firing ranges has been leeching out and contaminating soil and groundwater causing several to be closed. The contaminated soil from these ranges has to be removed and disposed of as hazardous waste at great expense. Bullet traps, although effective in reducing the leeching effects of lead, need to be regularly cleaned by specialized hazardous waste handling companies. When shooting conventional leaded ammunition, airborne lead at the firing line is inhaled, causing potential health concerns. This airborne lead is also deposited on nearby soil.
